opt out from facebook - a distraction

Today is the 4rth time I opt out from facebook, I just deactivate my account.

Facebook as the biggest happening out there is very distracting, at least for me. Their "privacy concern" and how they manage user data make me uneasy (since I have a little phobia about privacy over internet).

I need to admit I am facebook die hard fan, with facebook is the first thing i open when i use my browser, the second will be my email. I love how it enable people to connect to each other. However, this hype of social media make me sick. My network of friend is expanding exponentially but I only contact few of them. Group and discussion happen every time on facebook yet only few which will give you positive feedback and i don't mean that hilarious "like". It really can change people habit, now some of my friends do not even reply when i text them, all assignments posted there, class updates, almost everything which make my life even miserable.

All of the things above contribute on how distracting facebook is. It never let you "not to be curious" on what happening with your friends, with your status, with how many people comment on it and how many people like and some people who poke you. I know there was an article or research conducted about the time a person need to continue and give all of their focus to work after open an email, and facebook is really giving me difficulties to go back and focus on my work. I become unproductive and unresponsive as in I really can't help myself not to check the notification, reply the comment which end up into conversation over wall, scroll down the news feed about what are the things my friends do right now, checking who gave any comment or post on the group, and don't forget those people who tag you, poke you and the persistent activity ticker.

When i counted how much time i use everyday on facebook i surprised. More than 60% of my online time was for facebook ( more than 60 can be 70 or up to 100 =.= ). This explain why my blog sometimes become very empty. Deactivating my facebook will cut the time for online or at least i can write more and better post for my blog, read more article and news and focus on my work.

I remember the time i deactivate my account, i don't have any tendencies to even check my facebook or type it on address bar. I have more quality time i can spend with my real life friends, family, works and my hobby. I feel totally alive and real.

I always think if every friend i have can be easily contacted through email or sms I will gladly remove myself forever from facebook, yet this seems impossible, at least for now.

Aside from that I do still have other social media such as my twitter, but my main concern for twitter is to find news and I am able to control it, this reason also explain why I only follow some of my friends.

Anyway, for student who immerse themselves on facebook, you should read this article
